artist: Stefan Glerum
project: t-shirts design for Obey
Clothing brand Obey Clothing, founded by street art icon Obey aka Shepard Fairey asked Stefan to come up with designs for t-shirts to be released under a Obey x Stefan Glerum artist series. Stefan took the word 'obey' and ran with it, resulting in the following three designs.
Stefan Glerum (1983) lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Stefan spent four years in Breda studying illustration at the Academy St. Joost. He also worked as an assistant to one of the country’s most celebrated comic artists, Joost Swarte.
Stefan Glerum’s style is like a melting pot of illustration heritage. While its subconscious familiarity has universal appeal, his work is also a study point for those with knowledge of graphic design history.
His work is inspired by early 20th Century movements such as Art Deco, Bauhaus, Italian Futurism and Russian Constructivism, which he combines with popular themes, executed in a style reminiscent of the clear line.
For the Obey Artist series Stefan used his clear line way of drawing to illustrate his own view on ‘obey’ in a comic fashion.
He designed three prints creating three different situations throughout history and future where persons are struggling with either having to obey or being obeyed.
